I have been tricked.
All week, I’ve been ready for Burnley to play Manchester United tomorrow morning. I’ve planned my week around it. Not watching it. But keeping tabs on the score. Doing the refresh-Burnley’s-Twitter-account thing. Putting up blog posts before and after.
And they aren’t playing.
I got my first hint of this when I saw somewhere a few weeks ago that the game was postponed, even if it didn’t say postponed everywhere (shoutout to the YAHOO SPORTS APP™, my continued occasional nemesis). I got my second hint of this when I saw that Burnley was playing a friendly today against some Portuguese team. I got my third hint of this when I saw that Dwight McNeil scored in said friendly. Why in the queen’s name, I said to myself, did that bloke Dyche play McNeil in a friendly the day before the season opener? And then I googled and found out the postponement was not a hoax.
It turns out that because Man U played all the way into the Europa League semifinals (congrats on that, by the way) they get a little extra break, so Burnley’s 2020-21 season won’t start ‘til midweek in the illustrious Carabao Cup (I think it’s actually semi-illustrious, but it’s fun to imply it isn’t illustrious because it’s sponsored by Carabao and I have no idea what Carabao is).
Anyway, if anyone has two hours of Twitter-refreshing they’d like me to do tomorrow morning, let me know. My schedule just opened up a bit.
