Is San Diego State Bad?

San Diego State won last night. It was close, but they won. It was scary, but they won. It was against Nevada, who isn’t all that good…but they won.

It’s a compliment to San Diego State that we’re asking if they’re bad. Most of the time, if a team’s in our wheelhouse, we’re telling them how great they’re doing. Patting them on the head. Giving them cookies. Fattening them up for the moment when we eat them. But not San Diego State. We respect them more than that. We respect them enough that we’ll tell them, after a five-point home victory, that they’re bad.

And we like it.

We like bad San Diego State.

For one thing, it means a more chaotic Mountain West season. But more importantly, it means San Diego State might play in the NIT. And a team with high attendance (during non-pandemic times), enough brand recognition in specific college basketball circles to drive ratings, a location far enough from New York to be excited about a trip to New York, and one of the best living basketball players counted among their alumni is a team we want with us.

So come on down, San Diego State, and don’t be scared. We’re in this for all of us.

Other notes for today:

  • Cin-mbio…ok that isn’t working. Cincinnati beat SMU last night in Dallas and it helped both teams.
  • Business as usual out of Maryland and Northwestern, neither of which was competitive in a home game against a top ten team. Tip of the cap.
  • Northeastern took over the CAA lead, for those who care about the CAA lead.
  • UCLA went down to Arizona and beat ASU in overtime, and honestly, we don’t know what that does for ASU’s NIT chances. We think they’re good. (The chances. Not ASU. Definitely not ASU.) But also they might not be good. (Again, the chances. We know ASU isn’t good.) Confusing stuff.
  • Tonight, Davidson plays a team we said we wouldn’t talk about after they lost to too bad of a team for the second straight game. It’s in Davidson. “At” Davidson? Both are true. I saw an intersection last night while driving Stuber Eats that was Shoot Out Court and Gun Fight Lane. Tried to take a picture but it kept being blurry with the flash and I felt like I might appear creepy.
  • In MACtion, Ohio visits Toledo. Toledo’s the league favorite, but what is a league favorite if not a team that is the most likely to win a league?
  • In Conference USAtion, Louisiana Tech visits Western Kentucky. Big one for our guy Big Red (I’ve gotta figure out how he’d fit in a go kart—please remind me to get on that).
  • We wished Michigan State farewell the other day, but if they lose at home to Purdue, they might be back. Such is life near the NIT. It’s hard to stay away.
