Is Colton Herta the Future of IndyCar? Five Thoughts.

1. Is Colton Herta the future of IndyCar?

Another week, another young gun grabbing a win. Herta dominated. Evidently he’s been around for a few years? Saw he was 21 and assumed he was a rookie or similar.

2. The circuit did sound cool, but it didn’t look that cool.

Sounds like being in St. Petersburg for this race would be awesome. Watching on TV? It looked fine, but I was kind of hoping for it to be more like the coolest track in an open-wheel video game. Sorry if that was an unfair expectation. But when you include an airport runway and say it’s downtown? I expect skyscrapers and passenger jets.

3. Jimmie Johnson’s ineptitude is hilarious.

I love Jimmie Johnson. Super cool guy. And he’s handling this with humility and humor, which is making it all the more fun.

Look at that guy! “Oop, sorry everybody!” *waving as they go past*

4. They’ve got some interesting ways to force strategy.

I was not expecting the red tire/black tire thing, and I was sure I was misunderstanding the push-to-pass thing. Wild. The push-to-pass sounds high tech, and I’m impressed they got the balance between the red and black tires close enough that not everybody does the exact same thing. Are those a thing every race? Trying to watch more but it’s going to take me a while to pick things up, friends.

5. Alright, let’s figure out how the standings work.

Ok, so it looks like it’s kind of in between NASCAR and Formula 1. Without the NASCAR stage and playoff systems, of course, but makes the middle of the pack competitive while still prioritizing top finishers. If you know what’s going on and want to correct me, please, go ahead.
