Independent Car Goes Smalltown

My favorite IndyCar joke is that it’s a hipster racing series that doesn’t take any money from the corporate goons. That’s still my favorite one.

Another race today.

Where It Is

World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway—it’s just east of St. Louis, and it’s the oval at the complex. They designed it to be like Phoenix and New Hampshire, which is an odd combination and kind of like designing a vegetable to be like peas and radishes—just a big who cares. The whole thing’s kind of wacky, and a lot of folks don’t like IndyCar racing ovals outside of the 500, which is probably fair considering…death.

So get excited!

When It Is

8:00 PM EDT

How to Watch

NBCSN

Who to Watch

Josef Newgarden (+400) and Scott Dixon (+450) are the favorites. In the standings, watch for Dixon (34 points back) and Pato O’Ward (21 points back) to try to catch series leader Álex Palou. After tonight, only three races remain, and they’re all on the west coast where the points count less (not true, but technically true on average because they make the Indy 500 worth more points).
