This is a little late, but the Iditarod ended on Monday.
In the end, 39 teams completed the race. One dog, Oshi, passed away due to pneumonia, and I don’t know enough about dogs or sled-racing to know how unexpected that is or whether Oshi’s musher was at fault, but I’m guessing that if you want to know, you can dig around on Twitter under the #uglydogs hashtag and find out more information.
That #uglydogs online community is a powerful one, and one that certainly seems to love dogs. I say they’re powerful because in a very impromptu manner, they raised $100,000 for Alaskan schools over the last few weeks. Here’s the story if you’re interested: https://www.adn.com/outdoors-adventure/iditarod/2019/03/21/its-kind-of-a-miracle-uglydogs-group-helps-raise-more-than-100k-for-alaska-schools-during-iditarod/
This concludes The Barking Crow’s haphazard coverage of the 2019 Iditarod. We may cover the race again in 2020, perhaps in more depth. There is no way to know.
