I Can’t Quit Weber State

It’s true.

Weber State will not let me go.

I thought I was done with them. They didn’t seem interested in the rebrand of a lifetime (search Weber State Beekeepers long enough on The Internet™ and you’ll get the idea). I didn’t seem certain I wanted to support a boringly-named team. I stopped posting about them.

Yet here we are.

A week ago, the Weber State president tweeted the following:

To which I responded:

To which he responded by liking my tweet.

He had me cornered.

How do you not support an FCS football team when their university’s president has liked one of your tweets? Likes don’t come easy. Not when you’re an NIT blogger.

So, I’m back.

And after figuring out what the heck is going on in the FCS world, I’m fired up. Because I happen to have stumbled back into Weber State fanhood at a thrilling time.

Tomorrow, the Beekeepers (I believe I’ve reached an unspoken agreement with the powers that be to keep calling them that) travel to Missoula (love that city) to play Montana. If Weber State wins, they clinch the Big Sky’s automatic bid in the FCS Playoffs, which will likely mean not only a first-round bye, but the second or third overall seed, which would put them on the right side of the bracket from North Dakota State. If they lose, they still make the playoffs. Not sure if they would get a home game or a bye, though.

Of course, I love Montana. It’s a beautiful state. I also love North Dakota State (I bought a Carson Wentz Bison jersey to wear around Minneapolis when the Eagles played in the Super Bowl—and Fargo is great). I’ve really put myself in a bad position here. Or a good one. Because if Weber State wins, I can jump on it with tweets like “#WeberFever *series of honeypot emoji’s and fire emoji’s*”. And if they lose, I can jump on it with tweets like “Good branding always wins—well done, Montana. Weber State friends, let’s keep grinding. We’ll all be Beekeepers soon.”

Anyway, go Beekeepers. But don’t go Wildcats. Go ahead and make sense of that.
