The way I see it, there are ten possible ways to spell jaywalk.
1. Jaywalk
This is how I think it’s spelled.
2. Jay-walk
This is how it must be spelled if there’s a dash in there. A hyphen? What is a hyphen? We’ll circle back another time.
3. Jay-Walk
This is how it’s spelled if there’s a dash and Jay-Walk is a proper noun. Are crimes proper nouns? They seem pretty improper to me.
4. J-walk
Another noteworthy possibility. This is what provoked the post. The pondering of whether it’s the letter “j” or the word “jay.” If it’s the latter, is this about corvids not using crosswalks?
5. J-Walk
Proper noun thing again.
6. J.A. Walk
J.A. Happ, longtime MLB pitcher and distant relative of mine on the premise that all baseball teams are family, pronounces his first “name” (if you can call it that), “Jay.” So, phonetically, this works.
7. Jeighwalk
You never know.
8. Jaewalk
It’s possible.
9. Jae Wok
What if this word isn’t from the European languages?
10. Jaywalk
(I looked it up this is correct.)
