Has There Been Any News on UC-Riverside’s Athletic Department?

Last summer or fall, former UC-Riverside soccer player Ashley Kelly (née Parks) posted something on Instagram about keeping UCR athletics. Evidently the school is facing a big drop in revenue due to the coronavirus, and since the athletic department’s heavily financed by student fees (rather than its own moneymaking), the school’s thinking about getting rid of it.

Which, yeah, makes a lot of sense. But would also be very sad, especially because it could potentially rob us of future Joe Kelly’s. (Joes Kelly?)

Yes, as we all know, though the UC-Riverside athletic department has failed to make money, it has given us one of the greatest athletes of all time, if not the greatest. And isn’t that what universities are for? Marks on humanity?

Anyway, haven’t heard about this in a while so I thought I’d bring it up. Getting curious. Hopefully the basketball team makes some noise and brings in some cash this spring. In the NIT, of course (no but really if you have to make the other tournament, go for it, Coach Magpayo—we’ll understand).
