Holy cow.
The Result:
Burnley 2, Everton 1
How It Happened:
Early goal by Chris Wood. Spectacular goal by Dwight McNeil a bit later. Everton drew within one before halftime, and there were some scares in the second half, but the lads held on for the mammoth road win.
What It Means:
Two weeks ago today, things looked bleak. Burnley had managed only six points out of a four-game stretch against bottom-half foes, and had sandwiched in a disappointing FA Cup loss to Bournemouth in the middle of it all. They were entering four straight against top-half foes, and when they were pulverized by Tottenham on the last day of February, the relegation knuckles got a little white.
Then, Burnley drew with Leicester.
Then, Burnley drew with Arsenal.
And today, Burnley took down Everton, making it five points in four games.
With nine to play, Burnley leads Fulham by seven points, with Fulham occupying the topmost relegation spot as things stand. Over those nine, Burnley plays four of nine at home and six of nine against fellow bottom-half squads (though only two of the home matches are against the bottom half). That should be enough to hold Fulham, or Brighton, or Newcastle at bay. Only need to stay ahead of one of them.
So, not in the clear yet. But a whole lot closer. Three points, to be exact.
Other News:
Nothing I noticed.
General Thoughts:
Wet dog could smell worse. It isn’t great, but it isn’t completely disgusting. I mean, dogs poop and stuff. That’s way stinkier.
Burnley Thoughts:
The rollercoaster continues, but the general trend upwards also continues. When the club returns to play in April, they’ll be playing for a shot at 14th, or maybe even 13th. I like it, guys. I like it.
