Good Day, Almost Great Day, for the Burnleys

Ok well first off, maybe Patrick Bamford should try not being such a soft little punk. Secondly, oof, that was disappointing. Thirdly, Maxwel Cornet!

The Result:

Burnley 1, Leeds 1

How It Happened:

Burnley grabbed the lead halfway through the second half as Chris Wood sent a Matt Lowton shot into the net after James Tarkowski headed Dwight McNeil’s corner off the bar. From there, though, Leeds put the lads on their heels, with Bamford eventually breaking through with just a handful of minutes remaining.

It was a rough game, and Bamford was, as has been said, pretty soft about it. Also a fairly even game performance-wise. Draw was reasonable.

What It Means:

At the moment, Burnley’s 16th in the table, one goal ahead of Newcastle, who also has just one point. The Clarets are still 33% likely to be relegated, per FiveThirtyEight. That’s fifth-worst in the league, or, again, 16th. But it’s very close (the next four are at 35%, 37%, 39%, and 48%).

What’s Next:

There’s an international break now, from which Burnley will return on Monday the 13th, when they visit Everton.

Other News:

Cornet! I believe I saw this was the biggest transfer in Burnley history? If not, close. The 24-year-old Ivorian comes over from Lyon, one of the top clubs in France. I don’t know how good TransferMarkt is at what they do, but they have him as the fourth-most valuable Claret, behind Tarkowski, McNeil, and Nick Pope (age appears to factor into this). It sounds like Burnley’s also trying to pick up Connor Roberts from Swansea. He’d be around the middle of the roster in those value rankings (now just need to get Sean Dyche extended—wonder if that’ll be finalized once the window’s over).

The window closes tomorrow, so we’ll cover any news in our international roundups this week, tentatively scheduled for tomorrow and Friday.

Burnley FC Women fell on the road to Derby County, 2-1, after pulling within one with six minutes left before stoppage time. They’re ninth in the thirteen-team table, from which the bottom three are relegated.

In partner club action, Cobh Ramblers (Ireland, second tier) lost 3-2 to Maynooth (third tier) after losing a man to a red card in the second half, falling out of the FAI Cup. Llandudno (Wales, second tier) won a league match against Conwy, 2-0, climbing to fifth in that table. I believe only the champion is promoted there, but I’m not positive. They’re about a quarter of the way through the season. We should have more on the partner clubs tomorrow in the roundup.

Thoughts:

Burnley seems to have played well enough to warrant having another point or two at this stage, but it’s early, they’re not in the relegation zone at the moment, and they’re getting stronger through the transfer market which is a big difference from recent history, to my understanding. Also, it’s good to have played well enough to warrant having another point or two at this stage. That is better than deserving, say, zero points and having one.

If you aim for a point per match, the Clarets could get there in two matches’ time with stellar results against Everton and Arsenal, and could get there by the end of October with three wins out of their next seven and no draws (they visit Everton, Leicester, and Manchester City over the stretch, with home matches against Arsenal/Norwich/Brentford and a trip to Southampton providing better competitive opportunities—steal a draw from Everton/Leicester and win two/draw two of the four winnable ones and you are in business, good sirs). Not a bad opening volley.
