Formula 1: Idiotic. Who Knew?

European sports are funny, compared to American sports, in how short they are. F1 races? Two hours usually, tops. Soccer games? Two hours usually, tops. It makes following them very pleasant. I understand the allure. Also, I assume this is why England had to leave the EU. Cricket matches just take too much time.

Anyway, I don’t know a lot about Formula 1, but I’m assuming this desire for brevity factors into why they…evidently don’t do rain makeups? I’m baffled by this. I do not understand it a bit. Have they never heard of the concept of doing something later than originally planned?

Maybe it’s their hubris. Maybe it’s because F1 likes to think it can race in the rain. Turns out, it can’t. And now they’ve given points—half points, which makes it even funnier, but still points—for qualifying, while also doing a bizarre little parade of caution laps. And at a classic circuit, no less!

That was one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen.

Now, looking ahead, with Covid stirring up the calendar, I do wonder if they’d come back? Their schedule isn’t updated on the site to account for the Japan cancelation, but my impression is they have an open weekend between Italy and Russia and an open weekend right after Russia. Just a suggestion, F1.

It’s stunning. Really. I watch a lot of NASCAR and Major League Baseball, so I’m well familiar with institutional incompetence, but this is worse than anything I’ve seen either of those two governing bodies do. This is among the most incompetent things I’ve ever seen, and I once worked for a guy who had me hide in the basement all day rather than do stuff because he was worried his rival in the maintenance department would steal me and make me do different stuff.

The tires exploding at Baku were funny. This wasn’t funny. This was just incomprehensibly dumb.
