For Texas, It Should Only Take One

Texas is off track. It’s been six and a half weeks since the program beat one of the Big 12’s seven good teams. During the stretch, the Horns have had to deal with the coronavirus, with snow/ice/power outages, and with one-possession and overtime games breaking in their opponents’ favor by a 4-1 margin.

But beat Kansas tonight on Senior Night? Do it comfortably? Do it with a full roster?

One would imagine this would be enough to sell a Texas-is-back-in-the-groove narrative, most importantly to the players themselves.

Just in time for March.

The Opponent

The Kansas Jayhawks. Winners of five straight, three of which came against the bottom of the Big 12 barrel. Better run than Texas, but not exactly cruising themselves.

What Texas Needs to Do

Well, Fran Fraschilla’s been relegated to national radio (we get Jay Bilas in the analyst chair), so the vibes should be better for those of us watching at home.

In seriousness, though, Texas just needs to win a game they’re favored to win, get back ready for a good March run, and get that Shaka Smart contract extension signed so we can all breathe a little easier about the long game.

On the Court

David McCormack’s been getting more touches for Kansas recently. He particularly ate up Oklahoma State and Iowa State. If Jericho Sims and Kai Jones have trouble with the big man, could be time for Brock Cunningham to play the fifty-pounds-lighter card and get away with murder in the paint.

The Jayhawks have struggled to defend the perimeter on the season, so look for Courtney Ramey to stay hot too, and for Andrew Jones to bounce back.
