I…I just…
There’s a lot here.
From Burnley’s official team site:
To celebrate Black History Month at the club, we asked our first team players and BFC Women players to choose music created or sung by black British artists, to form our Players’ Playlists.
It seems fine enough. Nothing wrong with it on the surface. But, guys…
Eminem is…Eminem is white. That’s, uh, that’s kind of his thing.
And then also…guys. You posted this on October 31st.
What the hell?
Burnley’s been appropriately explicit in its condemnation of, say, the White Lives Matter banner fans, or the fans booing players kneeling at the start of matches. I don’t think Burnley as an organization is bad-faithedly racist or anything (God, I hope they aren’t). And to be fair, the Spotify playlist’s own definition of the playlist is a little looser than the Burnley article’s definition of the playlist: A selection of music from different genres moving through the decades in celebration of Black producers, artists and international music of black heritage from across the globe.
But man. What a move. Yikes.
