The Olympics! Would you look at that.
The Olympics
Chris Wood made Burnley proud yesterday (today, I guess, technically), notching New Zealand’s lone goal in their 1-0 shutout of South Korea. Next game Sunday against Honduras, followed by a Wednesday tilt with Romania to close out group play.
The Kits
Spreadex is the sponsor, so that’s news. You will see the word Spreadex on the shirts. Not a lot else to say about it.
Transfers
Jimmy Dunne has signed with Queens Park Rangers. Burnley has acquired Wayne Hennessey, a veteran goalkeeper from Wales who’ll be part of Nick Pope’s backup squad. The window doesn’t close until the end of August, so lot of time left.
Still No Sean Dyche Extension Announcement
But no rumor negating earlier reports that it’s coming, so that’s good.
Friendlies
The lads won a split-squad pair of friendlies on Saturday against a League One club and a League Two club, and we got this picture of one of the subs taking a leak on a tree:
Next friendly on Saturday against Oldham Athletic, followed by one Tuesday against Blackpool.
Burnley FC Women
The schedule’s been announced, and the women’s side will head to Sheffield FC for their season opener on August 15th.
Partner Clubs
Cobh Ramblers beat Cabinteely on Saturday, 1-0, staying in eighth place (of ten) and staying eight points back of promotion playoff territory. They’ll play at Liffey Wanderers (third-tier club playing in the Leinster Senior League) on Sunday in their first match of the FAI Cup.
Ayr United has played twice in the Scottish League Cup since we last spoke, winning both matches. The first was a 3-0 victory last week over Edinburgh City. The last was a 1-0 victory over fellow second-tier club Hamilton Academical on Tuesday. The Honest Men then clinched a first-place finish in the group earlier today after they were awarded a 3-0 forfeit victory over third-tier Falkirk in their group stage finale when Falkirk fell victim to Covid-19 issues. The second round draw (Round of 16) will take place Sunday.
Ayr also won a friendly against Burnley’s U23’s last weekend, and will open league play a week from Monday.
Portadown is losing right now to Ballymacash Rangers in a friendly. Ballymacash Rangers are at least two tiers lower than Portadown, I believe. It appears Portadown has another friendly next Friday against Knockbreda F.C., one tier down from the Ports.
Llandudno coughed up a two-goal lead late against Denbigh Town in their Welsh League Cup opener, but advanced through on penalties over their third-tier opponent and now will host defending first-tier champions Connah’s Quay Nomads on Friday the 6th or Saturday the 7th.
