Oklahoma State lost its Big 12 opener last night, which means two things for us:
1. Jamie Dixon gets to be happy for a night, and we’re happy for him for that.
2. The chances of us getting Cade Cunningham in March just grew.
It’s easy to overstate what getting Cunningham would do for the NIT. He’s a lottery pick, and lottery picks often sit the NIT out. If you think his decision not to leave Oklahoma State high and dry when the sanctions came down means he’s going to decide against sitting out an NIT, remember that he probably only stayed with the Pokes because Mike Boynton was like, “Hey man, we’re going to appeal and you’re going to be worth a lot of money to the NCAA, so don’t worry about that whole thing.” There is a very small chance Cade Cunningham plays in the NIT, especially seeing as the odds of OK State making it are probably below 50%.
But we can dream.
Elsewhere:
- Purdue hurt their cause, taking down Ohio State in Columbus.
- Pitt helped its cause, beating Miami in Miami.
- Miami did something to its cause and we don’t know what, because Chris Lykes was out and we’re just really confused about the Canes right now.
- Toledo beat Marshall in the most hyped Toledo/Marshall game since…I don’t know. I feel like it was hyped more than the last few. I hyped it more than the last few, and I don’t know who else was hyping it. Lot of hype. Toledo won.
- Sneaky-lot of NIT-relevant games tonight, including some of the stars of this season. Seton Hall visits Marquette, looking to keep their NIT-perfection alive by yet again doing what they should. NC State and St. Louis play in a game in which, if it’s on TV, the broadcasters will grossly mislead the public about how good both teams are. And San Francisco, our beloved San Francisco, goes to Oregon. Giddy up (we’re saying giddy up now).
- Oh man, almost forgot! Arizona State lost to UTEP! By 13! Sun Devils are coming to us, and with speed.
