Sometimes, Chris Wood doesn’t have to score for Burnley to advance to the Olympic quarterfinals.
The Olympics
The New Zealanders drew with Romania while South Korea laid a whopping upon Honduras, propelling Chris Wood & Company through to the knockout stage. They’ll play Saturday against Japan, and while it’s on Japan’s home turf, it’s also in Kashima, and to my knowledge Chris Wood has scored in every match he’s played in Kashima.
Transfers, Sean Dyche Extension
Still no announcements of anything, and not a lot of buzz. Got some time, of course, but I for one am impatient.
On the outgoing side: Adam Phillips, a midfielder, is going back on loan at Morecambe (League One) for another year, while Bailey Peacock-Farrell is going to Sheffield Wednesday (League One) on loan for the year after Wayne Hennessey was brought in to back up Nick Pope.
Friendlies
The lads took down Blackpool (Championship) 1-0 last night and will play Nottingham Forest (Championship) on Saturday. They also announced a visit from La Liga club Cádiz a week from Saturday for their final tune-up.
Partner Clubs
Cobh Ramblers (Ireland, second tier) drew a road match with Maynooth University Town (third tier) to start the knockout stage of the FAI Cup. They’ll play that in about a month. Next up is Friday’s match against league-leading Shelbourne up in Dublin.
Ayr United (Scotland, second tier) is off until Monday, when they open league play at Kilmarnock, who was relegated from the Premiership at the end of last year.
Portadown (Northern Ireland, first tier) has a friendly on Friday against Knockbreda (second tier) over in Belfast.
Llandudno (Wales, second tier) drew with Prestatyn Town yesterday, meaning they’re not in last place, holding one point after their second of thirty league matches. They’ll stay on the road Saturday against Llanrhaeadr. The Seasiders (this is funny—Prestatyn’s nickname is also the Seasiders, per Wikipedia) also learned they’ll host Llay Welfare (third tier) in their first Welsh Cup match in two weeks’ time.
