Nick Pope allowed a goal for England.
But he still won!
The roundup from the last two days of Burnleys in the wild (“the wild” being UEFA World Cup Qualifying, in this instance):
England
Nick Pope did allow a goal to Poland, but the Englands still got the win. Strong start for those lads, who now have three wins in three tries.
Northern Ireland
Bailey Peacock-Farrell saved Bulgaria’s only shot on goal, but the Green and White Army couldn’t find the back of the net themselves. In the same group as Italy and Switzerland, things don’t look too hopeful.
Czech Republic
Matěj Vydra came on with a few minutes left in the match with Wales but couldn’t provide the equalizer. Important match for the Czechs. Not good for them to have lost it. Great for Wales, though.
Iceland
Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson started but was not among those who scored as his native Iceland took down Liechtenstein 4-1.
Ireland
Robbie Brady started for Ireland as they…drew with Qatar in an international friendly. Not a great look.

Overall, it’s looking promising for England to make the World Cup, and that’s about it for teams featuring a current Burnley player, with the important caveat that Pope might go back to being Jordan Pickford’s backup when the latter’s healthy again. Of course, a lot can change, both with the qualifying situation and with Burnley’s roster. But that’s where we’re at after the last week and a half. Next matches in September.
