Nothing cool is happening with Burnley and it turns out New Zealand isn’t that good at soccer (despite Chris Wood’s best efforts) and this is all sorts of a bummer.
The Olympics
New Zealand lost to Honduras yesterday, 3-2, and while our guy’s goal early in the second half had put the islanders ahead, it just wasn’t enough. They play Romania on Wednesday, very early in the morning for those of us in Texas, and they might just need a tie to move on past group stage but they also might need to win, depending what South Korea and Honduras do in a simultaneous game. Drama! Hopefully Wood at least scores again. Not sure who else has two goals on the tournament.
Transfers, Sean Dyche
As was said, nothing cool is happening. Still waiting.
Friendlies
The lads beat Oldham Athletic (League Two) on Saturday, 2-0. They’ll play Blackpool (Championship) tomorrow.
Burnley FC Women
The women lost to Sheffield United (second tier, Burnley’s third tier but it sounds like there’s no promotion mechanism) in a friendly.
Partner Clubs
Cobh Ramblers (Ireland, second tier) beat Liffey Wanderers (third tier) 2-0 in extra time in their FAI Cup opener. They’re on to the second round—draw tomorrow, matches towards the end of August. Next match is a league one on Friday against the leaders, Shelbourne. Match is at Shelbourne, up in Dublin.
Ayr United (Scotland, second tier) learned they’ll play Dundee United (first tier) in three weekends in the second round of the Scottish League Cup.
Portadown (Northern Ireland, first tier) won a friendly Saturday against Comber Rec (fifth tier?).
Llandudno (Wales, second tier) opened their season without much warning Saturday, losing 3-0 at Guilsfield. It appears they play Prestatyn tomorrow, also on the road.
