Burnley Keeps Building

Ok, first of all, Alan Pace! There’s our guy. After picking up Maxwel Cornet over the weekend, Burnley announced the signing of Welshman Connor Roberts today to firm up the squad. Love it. Love the direction we’re going here. Keep the vibes going. Announce Sean Dyche’s extension later this week.

Internationals

Ok, I think the Burnley guys rostered for World Cup Qualifiers this week and next are as follows:

  • Nick Pope (England)
  • Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson (Iceland)
  • Matěj Vydra (Czech Republic)
  • Bailey Peacock-Farrell (Northern Ireland)
  • Wayne Hennessey (Wales)
  • Connor Roberts (Wales)

If there are others I’ve missed, or if some of these guys missed their respective cuts, hopefully I catch all that as the games come through. No promises, though! And speaking of the games, here’s what’s up with the first set, played tomorrow and Thursday (all times American EDT):

  • Thursday, 2:45 PM (ESPN+): England @ Hungary
  • Thursday, 2:45 PM (ESPN+): Northern Ireland @ Lithuania
  • Thursday, 2:45 PM (ESPN+): Iceland vs. Romania
  • Thursday, 2:45 PM (ESPN+): Czech Republic vs. Belarus

Wales will play a friendly against Finland tomorrow before resuming their qualifiers on Sunday. Of the four in action, Iceland might be the one under the most pressure. It’s still fairly early in the process, though. Hitting the halfway point in group stage for those the furthest in. I think only England and either the Czech Republic or Wales are favored to advance out of the five.

Burnley FC Women

The women’s squad next plays Sunday, hosting Huddersfield Town, who’s ahead of them by five points in the table after four matches.

Partner Clubs

Cobh Ramblers (Ireland, second tier) gets back to league play on Friday, visiting fifth-place Treaty United.

Ayr United (Scotland, second tier) has had their Covid-postponed game against Raith rescheduled for a week from today. That’s currently their next scheduled match.

Portadown (Northern Ireland, first tier) got rocked today by Crusaders FC (out of Belfast), losing 4-0. They’ll next play Saturday, at home against Larne.

Llandudno (Wales, second tier) hosts Broughton (also second tier) on Friday in the Welsh Cup, where I believe we’re in the Round of 64.
