Burnley Is Unstoppable. The Daytona 500 Is Not.

I awoke Saturday morning to thrilling news: Burnley had just taken a 2-1 lead over Southampton, a score that would hold up as Britain’s Team marched even closer to their coveted Europa League berth.

I went to bed last night on the heels of sad news: I wouldn’t get to watch the 2020 Daytona 500.

In between, here’s what went down:

Saturday, 8:40 AM

On the heels of Burnley’s thrilling victory, I dive into Wikipedia, confirming that Manchester City, those no-good cheaters for whom I hold great disdain despite not knowing what they did, will not be allowed to qualify for either the Champions League or the Europa League, opening the door a notch further for our lads at Turf Moor.

Saturday, 9:30 AM-11:30 PM

Not a whole lot, honestly. Went out into hill country for a bit. Kept my eye on some big NIT action. Nothing that notable. Don’t think I even tweeted that much, right? Made that neat little Tacko Fall meme, I guess. Here it is:

Sunday, 8:15 AM

Daytona Day. I mentally prepare for my post previewing the Great American Race.

Sunday, 12:40 PM

Stuck in traffic on my way home from Cane’s, I resort to tweeting out my Daytona 500 preview, rather than posting it on the site:

Sunday, 1:29 PM

Whoops.

Sunday, 2:00 PM

Despite having been told (By The Internet™? By my imagination?) that the race would start at 1:30 Central, the race has not yet started. I’m peeved.

Sunday, 2:30 PM

There’s been some rain.

Sunday, 3:20 PM-ish

The race finally starts. A glorious few minutes ensue.

Sunday, 3:40 PM-ish

More rain.

I lose track of the timeline at this point, but in the end, I spent my day chirping Rob Manfred on Twitter with the rest of you. The Daytona 500 did not restart until today, because evidently NASCAR won’t let its drivers drive in rain (let it be known that I, a professional driver myself, prefer to drive in rain—more people taking Ubers downtown). I watched some Ryan Blaney hype videos and became cautiously more emotionally invested in his success. And there you are. Everything you need to know about Burnley and the Daytona 500. Might write a recap of the rain makeup. Might not. We’ll see.
