For the reigning national champions, it’s been a rough start to the 2024–25 season. A string of nonconference losses illuminated a broad array of weak points on a roster heavily reliant on newcomers. Big East play looked manageable, but the champs were hardly the favorites we expected them to be.
Then, last night, Seton Hall pulled off the comeback win they needed, taking down DePaul in overtime after Isaiah Coleman did this at the second half buzzer:
The haters will tell you it’s “only DePaul.” The haters will say Seton Hall’s still three games under .500. The haters will say this team just lost five straight games and cannot possibly be described as “hot.” Well, I’ll tell you a secret about the haters.
They’re not called haters because they’re filled with love.
They’re called haters because they’re filled with hate.
And what is the target of that hate?
Greatness.
When you are great, you are met with hate.
So no, Shaheen Holloway’s 2025 Seton Hall Pirates might not be the best basketball team the Big East has ever seen. No, the encore performance to 2024’s NIT championship might not feature Dylan Addae-Wusu & Co. reaching ten wins. No, I don’t think Seton Hall is going to beat Providence on Saturday, or Butler on Wednesday, or maybe anybody at all the entire rest of the month. Yes, this team is more than a little bit bad.
That doesn’t mean the Pirates didn’t just get hot.
The champs are doing so well, I bet they could beat Indiana State again.
