Are the Cubs Bad?

Well, well, well.

It appears the Cubs may be bad.

We held out hope. We hoped for “pretty good.” We expected “mediocre, but probably in contention.” Through ten games, it’s looking like the answer is “bad.”

Now.

We might be wrong. The Cubs may indeed be mediocre. Maybe they’ll win tonight, win tomorrow, and spin off some kind of 78-win season that leaves them treading water at the trade deadline and continuing this will-they-or-won’t-they saga with the rebuild. Maybe they’ll even win the Central.

But we also might be right. The Cubs might keep posting some of the worst offensive numbers in baseball. The rotation might remain hot and cold. Kris Bryant might keep hitting home runs, keep looking pretty disappointed in long, sad camera shots, and keep hoping the Cubs will say, “Hey, this guy who was supposed to be the future of our franchise might be the future of our franchise,” and give him the money he deserves while the Cubs prepare to pick up Freddy Galvis as their marquee offseason acquisition.

We’ll find out.

But it might take a while.
