The Colorado Rockies had a lot of chances last night.
Then Joe Kelly entered the game.
In the eleventh inning, with the score tied at four, Kelly trotted in from the bullpen and did the things he does the best:
- Get outs
- Win ballgames
- Throw a baseball 100 miles per hour
Shortly, the Rockies were dispatched, with Nolan Arenado grounding out, Daniel Murphy striking out, Mark Reynolds walking (charitable move by our hero), and Ryan McMahon helpless as he swung through the sharpest knuckle curve west of Auckland.
It was a foregone conclusion what would happen next. The Dodgers came to bat. Alex Verdugo hit a home run. The people erupted in revelry, thrilled at the Joe Kelly performance they had just seen.
It’s too early to say that Joe Kelly Bobblehead Night was the turning point. But as part of the proud tradition of sports journalists saying things too early, I’ll say it: Joe Kelly Bobblehead Night was the turning point.
