An Unintended Consequence of Jackie Robinson Day

Yesterday, there was a rough play at second base between Adam Eaton and Andrés Giménez. The benches cleared.

If you watch the video with the sound on, you might notice something.

Cleveland’s TV guy got Amed Rosario and Andrés Giménez confused.

Why did this happen? Well, Rosario often plays shortstop for Cleveland, but that wasn’t the main culprit.

The main culprit was that everyone was wearing the number 42.

I love Jackie Robinson Day, and I don’t intend this as making light of everything he means to, well, the world.

But if the benches clear on Jackie Robinson Day, it’s a lot harder than normal for umpires to figure out who to eject for stuff in the middle of the fray. Which is great, and hilarious, and hopefully results in somebody getting away with a lot of wedgies or something in the middle of a mid-April brawl.
