First round voting will begin tomorrow with the Waffle House and In-N-Out Regions. It will continue on Friday with the Culver’s and Steak ‘n Shake Regions. Second round voting is scheduled for Monday.

As we said on Monday, Texas and Illinois are heavily represented and are also where I’ve spent something like three quarters of my life. This is probably not a coincidence: Our blog talks a lot about things from Illinois and Texas, so people familiar with Illinois and Texas engage the most with our stuff. At the same time, though, when you map out a lot of these chains’ locations, it makes more sense for the Central regions of the country to be overrepresented. That’s where coastal chains move first. (I also suspect incorporation laws play a role in this, and might be part of why California and New York are underrepresented while Delaware’s overrepresented, but that still doesn’t explain Illinois.)

Whatever and wherever they are, these are the 64 regional chains you voted as the most beloved. We can’t wait to see them go head to head.

  1. I don’t think incorporation laws have to do with Delaware’s overrepresentation. I think it’s just the nature of the state: a lot of cheap real estate, a lot of strip malls, and that leads to a lot of chains moving in. It has also seen a fair bit of population growth over the last decade or 2, further attracting more chains. And you have a fairly strong base of upper middle class customers because there are a lot of bank employees and attorneys in the north part of the state around Wilmington.

On the other hand, you don’t need to operate in Delaware to incorporate there. You just need to have an agent for service of process (there’s a whole cottage industry of companies serving as your registered agent in Delaware). I don’t think being incorporated in Delaware makes it any easier to open a location there as a chain, you’d still need the requisite business licenses to actually do business in the state. Indeed, most companies incorporated there do not operate there. And Nevada is also a big state for incorporations, and yet Nevada is either accurately or maybe slightly underrepresented on your list.

    1. Great catch. Correcting it now. Yet another reason Denton is the new cultural capital of the United States of America.
