We did it. Well, Burnley did it. But we enjoyed it.
The Result:
Burnley defeated Millwall, 2-0.
How It Happened:
The young guns prevailed. Playing a squad with a lot of reserves, Burnley neatly dispatched their second-tier foe, with Josh Brownhill scoring right before the end of the first half and Matěj Vydra continuing his League Cup dominance with a stoppage time dagger.
What It Means:
Burnley’s on to the fourth round of the League Cup, where they’ll be one of 16 teams remaining.
What’s Next:
EPL Match Saturday at Turf Moor against Southampton.
For the League Cup, they’ll host either Manchester City or Bournemouth next week, a match of great importance to our Europa League dreams.
Other News:
We’ll start small: Jay Rodriguez rolled his ankle during the victory, making it unclear if he’ll suit up against Southampton Saturday.
We’ll get a little bigger: Burnley’s adding Dale Stephens, a veteran midfielder who was playing for Brighton. Sounds like he could be available Saturday? Maybe I misunderstood something.
Now, the biggest: An American sports investment firm is looking to buy the Burnleys. Sounds like a guy with old Real Salt Lake ties (that’s an MLS team, not a desperate housewives knockoff, and don’t worry I checked this isn’t the racist dude) is leading the firm.
General Thoughts:
Mustard residue looks gross. Hard to distinguish from mold. Keep your bottlecaps clean, friends.
Burnley Thoughts:
Would be pretty neat if Bournemouth were to upset Man City today. Not a great outlook after next round either way, though, so best to grab some points against Southampton and try to make the Europa League through conventional means, by which I mean finishing seventh and hoping teams ahead in the table win the cups.
