XIII. Lake Austin, Lake Travis

XII. The Toll Roads

**

There’s something ‘bout July which needs a boat,
and there’s something ‘bout a boat which needs a lake,
and there’s something ‘bout a lake which makes it differ from a river
and there’s something ‘bout a river and a wake.

Lake Austin is a lake but it’s still river.
Lake Travis is a lake and it’s all lake.
Lake Austin’s where the wake’ll make the river do a shiver
but Lake Travis is where wakes make lakes opaque.

Lake Travis fingers out and goes for miles.
Lake Travis gets you closer to the West.
Lake Austin makes a double-u or flipped a cursive em and then
Lake Austin hits a dam and finds its rest.

Lake Austin’s got the mansions and the bridges.
Lake Austin’s got the golf course and the hill.
Lake Austin’s more artistic but Lake Travis has that vista
and the Mansfield Dam spits out that rolling spill.

I don’t know about parties on Lake Austin.
Don’t know if Lakeway bursts the bombs in air.
If you’re coming for the Fourth, I’d hit downtown then head back north,
but for a daytime in July, underneath a cloudless sky,
if you’ve got all day, the lakes’ll be your where.
