A few thoughts on the 2000’s Bangers Bracket, as the second round comes to a close:
What am I supposed to be voting for?
Is this about which is more of a banger? A better banger? A bigger banger? Is it about which is more representative of the 2000’s, an explanation my wife used to explain a vote of hers yesterday? I’ve generally just left it at which song leaves me more fired up when I’m done listening to it (and yes, I listen to every song before casting my votes, and sometimes I split my votes across Instagram and Twitter if I think it’s just too close to call), but how are others approaching this?
Some of these songs feel like they’re from different decades.
Miley Cyrus referenced Britney Spears in “Party in the U.S.A.,” which I didn’t remember until midway through yesterday’s matchup. Wonder if the committee took that into account. Beyond that, there’s a pretty clean break between what I remember as elementary and middle school songs (I finished eighth grade in 2008) and what I remember as high school songs, like “Bad Romance” and “Single Ladies,” which I’m guessing is why the latter two feel so much newer to me than even, say, “SexyBack,” which I believe did come out while I was in middle school. Curious if those whose middle/high school break fell earlier, or fell outside of that decade, share similar feelings.
“Hey Ya!” is so good.
There is so much happening there. But I do understand, under either the banger argument or the 2000’s argument, why it might be about to lose. I did pull an NIT-Stu-exiting-The-Killers-concert yesterday and ask myself, “Is Hey Ya! the best song of all time?” yesterday.
How long can I keep my dog looking curiously at the speaker for Instagram videos of her “choosing” between songs?
Because I think we have an obligation to use Fargo to promote this bracket.
