Today’s Best Bets: Winning Streaks, Losing Streaks

We’re expanding our college basketball plays to two per day. This isn’t because we’re all that confident in them—our track record suggests real but meager profits—but because there isn’t much football left and we haven’t yet set up any futures portfolios for the NHL, NBA, or college hoops to fill space in these posts. It’s a content decision. We like calling these the best bets, plural.

Tonight’s:

College Basketball

South Carolina’s coming off a heartbreaker against Auburn, but they’re still going on the road as the worst team in the SEC. Vanderbilt’s trying to respond to two straight losses, but both were understandable. We expect urgency from the Commodores tonight, but not so much pressure that they crack.

Over in the ACC, both Stanford and Wake Forest are on a little win streak. Stanford just swept the Virginia schools in Palo Alto, while Wake’s beaten Syracuse, NC State, and Miami in order to get to 4–1, tying them for fourth in the league. We like Kyle Smith a lot and we’re scared of his teams on the road, because they tend to play with composure. But we do think Wake Forest is better, and again, we think the urgency favors Steve Forbes’s team. They entered this year with expectations, and this game and the next two (at Virginia Tech, home against UNC) give them a chance to get those expectations back.

Pick: Vanderbilt to win (–415). 40.00 units to win 9.64.
Pick: Wake Forest to win (–260). 40.00 units to win 15.38.

Still pushing the Google Sheet back to tomorrow, day after day, but…

2025: +73.42 units (started with 1,000-unit bankroll)

2025: 20% average ROI (weighted by unit; sample size: 14 picks)

Pre-2025: 0% average ROI (worse when limited to only sports)

Units taken from best odds we can find at major sportsbooks available to most Americans.
