Today’s Best Bets: Wednesday, February 8th

Editor’s Note: Since November 2018, Joe has been publishing picks here and back at All Things NIT, our former site. Overall, the results have been mixed, with an average return on investment, per pick, of -1% when weighting by confidence (1 for low, 2 for medium, 3 for high) across 4,653 published picks, not including pending futures, and an average return on investment, per pick, of +3% across 1,607 completed high and medium-confidence picks (low confidence picks, these days, are in experimental markets for us).

Use these picks at your own risk. Only you are responsible for any money you lose, and you should not bet more than you can afford to lose. If you’re afraid you might have a gambling problem, seek help.

Odds for these come the better option between Bovada and BetOnline. We used to use the Vegas Consensus, but it’s no longer consistently available in an accurate form online. KenPom is used in making college basketball picks. FiveThirtyEight’s SPI is heavily used in making soccer futures picks. ESPN’s FPI is heavily used in making NFL futures picks.

Texas Tech @ Oklahoma State

The further we get from Texas Tech’s comeback against Iowa State last week, the more it looks like an Iowa State meltdown as opposed to a Texas Tech uprising. Texas Tech continues to look bad, and Iowa State’s shaky under pressure. Meanwhile, Oklahoma State’s ascended to where they were expected to be entering the season. It’s a good team in Stillwater.

This all isn’t to say that Texas Tech’s a lightweight or that the Pokes are going to roll them tonight. It should be a tough game, because Texas Tech’s potent and capable of playing some gritty basketball. Oklahoma State’s the better team, though, and it’s not this close.

Pick: Oklahoma State -5.5 (-110). Low confidence.

Georgetown @ Providence

Against UConn this weekend, Georgetown was tied at the half. Against Xavier a few weeks ago, Georgetown was within six at the half. Against St. John’s and DePaul and Villanova recently, Villanova was either within four or led. They were tied at halftime against Seton Hall. They led Marquette at the half. The only recent time Georgetown wasn’t competitive in the opening twenty minutes came against Creighton last week. Maybe the trend stops tonight, but we’re willing to take our shot.

Pick: Georgetown 1H +7.5 (-110). Low confidence.
