Scenic Flight Path: Charlotte to Newark

I just googled “best flight path views usa” and this one didn’t come up, which makes me feel like some kind of internet explorer. Err. Explorer of the internet.

By happenstance, I was seated in a window seat Friday on a flight from Charlotte to Newark. I didn’t think much of the development, but I kept the shade open. Closing the window shade feels a little bit evil to me (unless there are clouds between you and the ground, in which case you can close it but you should peak out now and then and remember, whoa, I’m flying).

Then, about halfway into the flight, I heard something.

“Dad! Are we gonna see the Washington Monument?!”

It was a full family of kids. Three rows back. And they were fired the heck up to see the Washington Monument.

Sure enough, the obelisk came into view, along with the Capitol (I’d forgotten how long the National Mall is), the White House, the Lincoln Memorial…all of it. Then, a few minutes later, the dad was pointing out Baltimore’s inner harbor to the kids. And as though that wasn’t enough, we landed at Newark from the north, meaning we came in parallel to the island of Manhattan, watching the skyline rise beside us as we touched down.

So, if you’re ever trying to get to the northern Philadelphia suburbs and it’s significantly cheapest to fly American into Newark and to connect through Charlotte, consider grabbing a window seat. Specifically, on the left side of the plane.
