Notre Dame’s coronavirus outbreak appears to be rather contained. The seven-day daily average of new positive tests has dropped below ten. In-person classes have begun to resume.
The university is now administering a few hundred tests each day, many through a surveillance testing program that at first appeared to be limited to the athletic department (which still could have been useful at a school where roughly ten percent of undergraduates are student-athletes) but is actually inclusive of the whole student body, with a statement that faculty and staff will be added soon.
It’s possible, of course, for another outbreak to emerge on campus, and it’s unclear how many students, faculty members, and staff are dealing with severe effects from the first outbreak. But while the damage may still turn out to be real, the university administration seems to have at least righted the ship, and perhaps most importantly, a more serious approach is now in place.
