Baseball’s Biggest Unsigned Free Agents

Pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training this week, as Opening Day begins to crack the horizon. But the offseason isn’t over. Here, out of every free agent FanGraphs projects to notch 1.0 or more WAR, is every player still unsigned:

  • Jake Odorizzi
  • Rick Porcello
  • Matt Shoemaker
  • Taijuan Walker
  • Brett Anderson
  • Jackie Bradley Jr.
  • Brett Gardner
  • Mike Leake

It’s a short list, but not an empty one, and below the 1.0-WAR mark, there are a number of other moderately big names: Maikel Franco. Travis Shaw. Cole Hamels. Yasiel Puig. Todd Frazier. Trevor Rosenthal. Still more.

It’s a list heavy on starting pitching, which could mean nothing, or could mean something circumstantial about these specific pitchers, or could mean teams are planning on more bullpen games, or could mean teams are willing to wait into the season and see what pitching needs materialize as guys try to bounce back from a short season or, in some cases, a season off. It could mean all those things. It could mean none of those things.

Nothing major here. Just checking in on the (free agent) names left to move. Baseball is coming!
